A close friend of Pitt, Dundas held many offices in the government, including Home Secretary between 1791 and 1794, and in 1802 he became Baron Dunira and Viscount Melville. In 1805, while serving as First Lord of the Admiralty, Henry was charged with misappropriation of large sums of public money and impeached by the House of Commons. He was acquitted by the House of Lords and restored to the Privy Council.
