Archival historyTom Rodger was born in Waltry Cottage in 1920. His mother was Jean Gilchrist, the daughter of the gardener for the Stark family of Waltry, and his uncle Andrew Gilchrist was their chauffeur. Tom lived in Milton of Campsie until the age of 14, when he moved to Kirkintilloch. He started work at the Kirkintilloch Herald as a messenger boy, later becoming a linotype operator at the Evening Citizen where he worked for many years, and returning to work at the Kirkintilloch Herald shortly before retirement. During the Second World War Tom Rodger was a sapper with the Royal Engineers. He was wounded at El Alamein and in Sicily and took part in the D-Day Landings. In the 1960s Tom became a keen amateur photographer and a member of the Camera Club in Kirkintilloch.
