Archival historyThe Temperance movement in Kirkintilloch dates back to at least 1830, when the Kirkintilloch Temperance Society was formed, which advocated moderate drinking. By 1837 some had decided that a more rigorous approach was required, and the Kirkintilloch Total Abstinence Society was formed. The Society fizzled out some years later but was recussitated on 26 October 1852, when a public meeting was held at the Free Church in Kirkintilloch to re-form the Society with the aim of suppressing by every lawful, moral and Christian means, drunkenness and drinking usages in Kirkintilloch and neighbourhood. Public lectures soirees were held and in 1868 the Society formed a Band of Hope, a total abstinence society for children.
