TitleReplacement of Townhead Canal Bridge
ReferenceBK/19/5
Date1922-1933
Archival historyTownhead bridge was originally designed only to carry horse-drawn traffic, so the rise in popularity of motor-buses began to cause a strain on it. By 1931 double-decker buses had been introduced, increasing the weight on the bridge even further. This meant urgent action was required to prevent an accident. The town council presented a petition to the county council in 1932, and the bridge was closed and removed in October of the same year. Diversions were via Redbrae and Waterside roads, and crossed the river via a temporary pontoon bridge. The new swing bridge was officially opened on 2nd June 1933.
