Archival historyWestermains Bowling Club was formed in September 1852, originally as the Kirkintilloch Bowling Club. A club member, Mr Furlong, offered to lease ground to the north of Westermains House to the club and the green was formally opened in July 1853. By 1888 the green was considered too short, and a new ground at the head of Alexandra Street was acquired. The Kirkintilloch Bowling Green Co Ltd was established to build and maintain the new green which opened in June 1889, as the home of the Kirkintilloch Bowling Club. Many of the original club members remained at the Westermains Green, becoming known as the Westermains Bowling Club. By 1914, the establishment of a ladies section in the club was suggested, although the section did not come into being until 1945. In 1999 the club amended its constitution, and ladies and gentlemen were given equal opportunities in the club activities.
