Admin history/BiographyThe church and local landowners (known as heritors) had responsibility for the provision of a parish school in Bearsden until the introduction of the Education (Scotland) Act of 1872. This Act made education compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 13 and placed responsibility for education and the provision of school buildings on locally elected school boards.
It is not known when the first school was built. However a school building dating from 1880 was replaced with a new school built on the same site in 1910-11 called the New Kilpatrick Public School. This new higher grade school opened on 17 August 1911 with 448 pupils of whom 111 were in the higher grade section. Higher grade schools were intended for pupils who would remain in education up to the age of sixteen. The New Kilpatrick Public School was purpose-built as a higher grade school with large, light-filled workshops and classrooms for science, art, cookery and woodwork among other subjects.
Responsibility for education passed to county councils under the terms of the Education (Scotland) Act 1918. Subsequently the New Kilpatrick Public School was renamed Bearsden Academy in 1920, although it continued to offer both primary and secondary departments. In 1958 a new secondary school was built in Morven Road, Bearsden and this building became used solely for the primary department and was renamed Bearsden Primary School.
