Scope and ContentThis document is an indenture for the apprenticeship of Joseph Gibb to James Miller, weaver of Branziet Burn, Baldernock Parish. His guardians and guarantors (or using the Scots legal terms - tutors and curators, and cautioners) were Alexander Gibb, Fluchter; James Bowie, farmer, Colbeg, Balmore; William Gibb, farmer, Balmore; James Gibb, weaver, Balmore; and Andrew Winning farmer at or near Lochnough. The apprenticeship was completed by 1827.

Archival historyJoseph Gibb lived at Bardowie, Baldernock Parish. His father, also called Joseph Gibb, was dead by 1824 when Joseph became an apprentice weaver under James Miller of Branziet Burn, Baldernock. Joseph Gibb spent 3 years as apprentice to James Miller. The name of Joseph's mother is missing from the document. Research shows she may have been a Margaret Winning who married a Joseph Gibb in 1809 in Cadder.
