Admin history/BiographyEvelyn Stanley Whitfield was born on 4 January 1908 in England. She trained as a teacher at Goldsmith’s College, London in the 1920s. She was a teacher for twenty years. She married Herbert A Whatley in 1940. The couple lived in Birmingham and then moved to Scotland in 1953 living at 2 Hawthorn Ave, Bearsden. She was very active in the Milngavie Co-operative Society and the Milngavie Townswomen’s Guild. She wrote poetry and short stories and was an amateur painter and member of Bearsden Art Club. She was interested in politics having been brought up in and married into a Labour-supporting family. Her campaign interests included education, library services and road safety. In 1958 she stood as an independent candidate for the Fifth ward of Bearsden Burgh, though was not elected. This was the first election since Bearsden had gained Burgh status. She died on 18 November 1978.
