Admin history/BiographyWith the introduction of the Education (Scotland) Act 1872, Campsie School Board took over the management of the existing Torrance School. In 1880, the Old Torrance School was sold for £125 and new teachers were appointed in 1883. An extension for the school was officially opened on the 14th of March 1900. The current school building was opened in 1978 and then extended in 1984 to accommodate the growing population in Torrance. In August 1997 a nursery was also built on the school grounds.
During the First and Second World Wars the school remained open though attendance was frequently marked as ‘low’. After the First World War, the school was struck heavily with sickness; primarily due to influenza, mumps and scarlet fever. In both wars, the senior pupils helped maintain the school gardens and grew vegetables, such as potatoes. The school often struggled with heating problems during the winters of both wars but often no plumber was available due to the fighting within Europe and Asia.
Currently, the school teaches and cares for children from 3 to 12 years old. In 2000, Torrance Primary School celebrated their centenary. As part of the centenary celebrations pupils from the 1920s to 1940s shared their recollections of their time at the school.
