Many of Kirkintilloch’s weavers specialised in making ‘lappet’, a cotton cloth with a raised floral pattern. Kirkintilloch’s motto, “Ca’ canny but ca’ awa”, translates from Scots as, “Carry on carefully, but keep carrying on” and is thought to derive from a saying of local weavers when teaching their technique to loom apprentices.
