David Forrester Wilson was born and lived in Glasgow. He studied and then worked at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). The figure in this portrait is Dorothy Carlton Smyth (1880 - 1933) who also worked at GSA and was known for her design work, her involvement in the Arts & Crafts movement and her association with the Glasgow Girls. She was appointed Principal of Commercial Art at Glasgow School of Art in 1914, and began to concentrate more on teaching than costume design. However, in 1916 she designed costume and decoration for the Quinlan Opera Company's world tour. During the 1920s she illustrated books including for local publishers Blackie & Son. In 1933 she was appointed as the first woman director of Glasgow School of Art, but sadly died of a brain haemorrhage shortly before she could take up the post.
