DescriptionStoneware hot water bottles like this were often known as a 'pig'. They would be filled with hot water, the stopper has broken off on this one, and placed on it's side between the blankets or sheets to heat a bed. The short handle at the top, (that looks a bit like a pig snout) stays cool as it's not hollow which makes it easier to carry. The colloquial name 'pig', or pyg, is a Scots word for a pot, pitcher or jar that's usually earthenware.
