TitleThe Peel Brae, 1975
Creator Dick Stevenson
DescriptionThis framed watercolour depicts the area of Peel Brae in Kirkintilloch, to the back of the Auld Kirk Museum. It is of the road up to the War Memorial and Peel Park in 1975. You can see a building which once stood where the museum car park is today.
The artist, Dick Stevenson, has lived all his life in Kirkintilloch and attended Lenzie Academy and the Glasgow School of Art. He later taught art in schools locally, including Lenzie Academy and Cumbernauld High.
He has contributed greatly to the arts in the town over the years. He opened a small gallery in the town and from an open exhibition which he ran there, developed the local annual art show supported by the town council. His was the first art exhibition held in the Auld Kirk Museum around 50 years ago and he has had several successful solo and joint exhibitions since then.
He is well known in the local area for his watercolour paintings of the town and surrounding countryside and was often sought out for commissions of particular views or of someone’s home. He also enjoyed painting wherever he was on holiday, at home or abroad, and in particular the Fife coast.
Still painting in his 90s, Dick had his final exhibition at the Auld Kirk in 2023, exhibiting alongside his daughter Jackie. He continues to paint for himself and contribute to the annual local show.
