DescriptionThis figurine was presented to the Burgh of Bearsden in 1958 in recognition of their contribution to fundraising for training new guide dogs. The figure represents a German Shepard, to be called 'Roman' who was the first Bearsden funded dog. In the 1950s it cost around £250 to train a dog and their intended new owner. Locals to Bearsden and the surrounding areas raised funds through coffee mornings, whist drives, dances and also collecting silver paper such as milk bottle tops. Recipients of a dog would need to travel to one of the Centres, at Leamington Spa or Exeter, to meet and become familiar with their new companion. Between 1958 and 1965 at least 18 dogs were trained thanks to the fundraising efforts of Bearsden and the surrounding areas.
