TitleCoin of Antoninus Pius
DescriptionCopper coin of Antoninus Pius (86 - 161 AD), Emperor from 138 - 161 AD.
This coin was found in Twechar, likely minted in Rome and possibly brought from Italy by a Roman soldier. Although part of the lettering on the coin has been worn away it is possible to recognise it as having been struck during the rule of Antoninus Pius in 155 AD.
The abbreviations should read:
ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TRP XVIII
Which roughly translates to:
Antoninus Augustus Pius, Father of his Country, Tribune of the People
On the reverse of the coin is an image of the seated figure of Britannia with a shield.
