TitlePortrait of Beatrice Clugston
DescriptionBeatrice Clugston (1827 - 1888) devoted her life to supporting the poor and sick. She established ‘The Dorcas Society’ to provide practical support for patients in hospital.
Funds became increasingly necessary as the service grew and Beatrice became expert in raising finance through her friends and acquaintances who included city dignitaries, ministers, doctors, businessmen, lords and even royalty.
With money she raised through a ‘Grand Bazaar’ in 1875 she was able to purchase Broomhill House and 80 acres of Kirkintilloch land. The house had space for 49 adults and 12 children and supported patients suffering from incurable conditions.
This painting was originally a full length portrait with a gilt frame. It was altered, with the permission of the Broomhill Hospital Board, in 1953 to be the current size. The full size painting initally hung in the dinning room of the Hospital and then in the Men's Day Room.
In 1994 the painting was stolen from the hospital, however, it was later found for sale in the Barras, before becoming part of the Auld Kirk Museum collections in 2011.
