Creator Robert Bryden (Printmaker)
DescriptionRobert Bryden was born in 1865 in Coylton, Ayrshire. He was educated in Ayrshire and worked in an architect’s office before enrolling at the Royal College of Art in London. On graduating he travelled at home and abroad and produced etchings of many places he visited. He became well known for etchings of Ayrshire, including Ayrshire castles, Auld Ayr and Ayr characters. This Print is part of a series of 10 etchings depicting scenes from poems by Robert Burns, which were produced to commemorate the centenary of Burns' death. ................................................................................................................................
This depicts a traditional Halloween custom:
“Take three dishes: put clean water in one, foul water in another, and leave the third empty: blindfold a person, and lead him to the hearth where the dishes are ranged; he (or she) dips the left hand: if by chance in the clean water, the future husband or wife will come to the bar of matrimony, a maid; if in the foul, a widow; if in the empty dish, it foretells, with equal certainty, no marriage at all. It is repeated three times; and every time the arrangement of the dishes is altered.”
