Description
MV 'Spartan', was built in 1942 by J & J Hay of Kirkintilloch as a steam puffer for the Royal Navy. She was used to carry supplies for the fleet during World War 2 and was originally called VIC 18 . The abbreviation VIC stood for Victualling Inshore Craft. In 1946 she was renamed Spartan and used to transport cargo on the Clyde and west coast. Her steam engine was removed in 1961 and replaced with a diesel engine. She is the last surviving puffer built by Hays and is preserved at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine. This photograph shows the Spartan at Rothesay in 1966.
