Description

Toll-house, Glasgow Road. View showing old houses immediately next to the toll-house, 8th August 1956. Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges were abolished in the 1880s, but most toll-houses were retained as dwelling houses, often for roadmen. This one is still inhabited. The toll-boards are still in position, but are protected by plastic plaques bearing the same information.
