Description

St David's Free Church, Alexandra Street.
The Disruption of 1843 saw a split in congregations across the country including that of St. David's Ledgate, Kirkintilloch. The split arose over the kirk's disputes with the government's involvement in church decisions, the main issue being a congregations right to have a say in who ministered to them.
St. David's Free Church was born on 9th June 1844 'under the open sky', in a field on Alexandra Street opposite the site where a church would later be erected, and opened, the following year due to the generous contributions of its congregation. The church cost less than £1,300 to build with no money being wasted on embellishments. When it opened the pews and pulpit were of plain, unpainted deal wood, there were no gas fittings, no matting, nor any proper vestry. The church was later to be gifted the first organ in Kirkintilloch.
One of St. David's U.F. Church's most famous personalities was the Rev. William Patrick who ministered there from 1878-1892.
The church was superseded in 1926 by St. David's Memorial Church on the same site.
