Description

Holy Family and St. Ninian's RC Church, Union Street, Kirkintilloch. View of church before Baptistry was built.
Prior to building the Irish Catholic community of Kirkintilloch walked to Lennoxtown to celebrate mass. In 1875 a "chapel school" was built in Union Street, by Father Magini, for the purpose of catholic education and worship. The initial project for building a church was conceived by Father Bonnyman and in 1893, his successor Father Beyaert, saw it completed. The church, built from red Dumfriesshire sandstone, is rock-faced and lighted by high windows. A tracery window sits above the main entrance door and above the door are carved the words "JESU, MARIA, JOSEPH".
The church was designed by famous London architect firm Pugin & Pugin and was built by local tradesmen Devlin & Sons of Glasgow.
Holy Family and St. Ninian's Roman Catholic Church was dedicated on 4th June 1893 by Archbishop Eyre of Glasgow.
