Francis Higgins moved to Milngavie in 1869 to continue his business as a boot and shoe maker. He became an active member of his community on the Town Council and in New Kilpatrick Church as well as numerous other duties. On the day of his funeral in April 1923 all the local shops were closed and a flag flew at half-mast in the local park.
