Description

James Paterson, JP, was Provost of Milngavie from 1930-1936. James Paterson was one of the Milngavie Provost's whose business interests lay in Glasgow. He was a partner in (and later proprietor of) the firm of William Wright & Co., Tea Merchants. A native of East Kilbride, he made his home in Milngavie in 1907. A fierce critic of the local Town Council, from a Liberal standpoint, he twice unsuccessfully attempted to be elected to that body, before achieving his goal in 1919. He took a great interest in Milngavie community life and was associated with many local organisations, including the Mechanics' Institute, the Ratepayers' Association, the Penny Savings Bank, the Social Union, the Literary & Debating Society, the Nursing Association, the Red Cross Society and Milngavie Bowling Club.
