He moved here in 1906 from Dowanhill in Glasgow. Professor Barr owned the famous instrument makers along with William Stroud. The two men were Professors of Engineering and Physics at the Yorkshire College (now the University of Leeds) in 1888. Their association resulted in the Company of Barr & Stroud in 1893. The factory that was based in Anniesland was built around 1903-1904.
