Description

Professor William Stroud, of Barr & Stroud instrument makers based in Anniesland resided briefly at "The Ridge" in Bearsden before moving to the country house "Bankell" north of Milngavie in 1909. It was in 1888 William Stroud began his association with Archibald Barr when they were both Professors of Engineering and Physics at Yorkshire College (now the University of Leeds), in that year they had responded to an article in the magazine "Engineering" to design a short-base rangefinder for infantry use.
