Archival historyMacaulay Stevenson was born in Glasgow, where he attended the School of Art part-time. His early work was Naturalist but, by the late 1880s, his work was profoundly influenced by Corot's imaginative treatment and technique. A member of the Glasgow Art Club from 1886, Macaulay Stevenson served a president in 1898-99. He was a member of the Munich Secession, which awarded him a gold medal in 1893; the following year he received a diploma from the Barcelona Academy. His moonlit landscapes were especially popular in Germany, Spain and the United States. Stevenson lived in France from 1910 and in Kirkcudbright between 1932-1951. The last survivor of the Glasgow School, he died at his former home in Milngavie [Robinsfield], aged ninety-eight.
