Admin history/BiographySir James Fletcher was born in Kirkintilloch in 1886 and emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 21. He founded the firm of building contractors, originally known as Fletcher Bros in 1912 which became a Limited Liability Company in 1916. In 1921 it was refloated as The Fletcher Construction Company Ltd, and the head office transferred to Wellington. The firm specialised in large building contracts, and particularly reinforced concrete buildings, and became one of the largest corporations in New Zealand. Sir James Fletcher was made a burgess of the Burgh of Kirkintilloch in 1950.
