Admin history/BiographyThe Kirkintilloch & Neighbourhood Friendly Funeral and Mortcloth Society was instituted in 1830 as an insurance scheme to help members cover the cost of funeral expenses. Members of the society had to be between 15 and 40, of good moral character and in good health. Benefits provided by the society were extended to the whole family, members paying sixpence for each birth, which was recorded in the family register, and thereafter receiving money on a sliding scale, depending on age upon death. The Society was dissolved in 1954.
