Admin history/BiographyIn the latter half of the 19th Century, Mr Armour sank a coal pit in Meiklehill to mine the minerals on his estate. The pit was later acquired by James Gardner & Sons, and was then taken over by Messrs James Wood Limited who sold it to United Collieries Limited. United Collieries also acquired Woodilee Colliery, which was originally owned by John McCallum, and then David Walker. A few years later, in 1907, David Walker bought back Woodilee Colliery and formed the Woodilee Coal and Coke Co Ltd. In 1908 the company acquired the Meiklehill Colliery. Meiklehill Colliery closed in 1926, and Woodilee in 1931.
