Archival historyBefore the introduction of GPS surveying, the Ordnance Survey used a system of control points to map the country. Triangulation points, marked by concrete pillars were used as fixed references for positioning other surveyed features. Minor Control Albums were used to store a lesser order of points, usually to assist with Town Surveys. Each dot and revision point on a 1:1250 map had Eastings, Northings, and a description including a photo. They were compiled by the 1km square and stations were added as and when they were needed, adding to the album.
Each photograph in the album shows a field labourer holding an arrow which indicates the point. The field labourer also holds a board giving its unique number within each kilometer square. The back of each book gives the Minor Controls Stations, with a description and a selection of referring objects for orientation.
