After leaving school he moved to Glasgow where he worked in business, establishing himself in an insurance company. Deciding that he preferred to pursue a career in medicine, he studied at Glasgow University, and after graduating, took up a post as ship's doctor on board a large ocean liner. In 1904 he moved to Kirkintilloch and entered into partnership with Dr Armstrong. The partnership was dissolved a few years later and he carried practiced on his own, first at Broadcroft, and later at Middlecroft. He died in 1918 aged 47. Dr Cowan had four children; his daughter Rita was well known as the wife of Japanese whisky distiller Masataka Taketsuru.
