Archival historySamuel Campbell Cowan was the second son of Rev James Cowan, minister of the parish of Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire. After leaving school he moved to Glasgow where he worked in business, establishing himself in an insurance company. Deciding that he preferred to pursue a career in medicine, he studied at Glasgow University, and after graduating, took up a post as ship's doctor on board a large ocean liner. In 1904 he moved to Kirkintilloch and entered into partnership with Dr Armstrong. The partnership was dissolved a few years later and he carried practiced on his own, first at Broadcroft, and later at Middlecroft. He died in 1918 aged 47. Dr Cowan had four children; his daughter Rita was well known as the wife of Japanese whisky distiller Masataka Taketsuru.
