Admin history/BiographyIn 1948 Mrs W B Macfarlane held a public meeting at Bearsden Academy to see whether there was any interest in forming a Townswomen's Guild in Bearsden. 105 people attended, and the Guild was duly formed with Mrs Macfarlane as president. Evening classes were promptly arranged, teaching country dancing, keep fit, cookery, dressmaking, leatherwork, needlework, china painting, joinery and lampshade and perspex work. At the end of the first session a meeting was held and it was decided to opt out of the Townswomen's Guild for financial reasons. The constitution was simplified and the Guild became the Bearsden Ladies Club.
The Club remained extremely popular for several decades, with a membership of 150 and a long waiting list of would-be members. By the 1980s, however, evening classes were provided by other organisations, and membership was in decline. In 1983 the Club committee decided that the needs of the community were adequately supplied by other sources, and the Club was closed.
