Archival historyProposals for a burgh slaughterhouse were initially discussed in 1859, but nothing came of them until they were revived in 1873, although they met opposition from local butchers, who wished to continue carrying out their own slaughtering. They were, however, allowed to apply for their own private booths within the slaughterhouse. The Town Council passed a series of related resolutions in March 1875: "Dungsteads & middens to be taken care of by the Local Authority, defaulters who threw or deposited rubbish or filth to be prosecuted under the Public Health Act; a public slaughterhouse to be erected without delay". The slaughterhouse officially opened on 24th February 1881.
