Admin history/BiographyMilngavie Townswomen's Guild was the first Townswomen's Guild in Scotland, being formed at a meeting called by the honorable Mrs Douglas of Mains, at the Lesser Burgh Hall on 8 November 1934. The aim of the Guild was to give women, who at that time did not usually work, an opportunity to get out fo the home and to expand their knowledge. The Guild ran classes on subjects such as handicraft, gardening, keep fit, badminton and public speaking, as well as having a popular drama group and choir. They also encourage community involvement, raising money for various charities.
Despite a break from meeting during the war years, the Guild remained very popular for several decades. By 2002, however, women's lives had changed dramatically, membership had dropped, and it proved difficult to find people to act as officers within the Guild. The Guild decided to close in April 2002.
