Admin history/BiographyThe Kirkintilloch Burns Club was founded in March 1874. It's purpose was less the traditional 'Burns Supper' meetings, but rather 'the cultivation of literary tastes, and the diffusion of literary information among its members', as the local newspaper reported it, and the Club held a series of lectures on Burns and Scottish literature. By 1878 the Club was experiencing difficulties in collecting subscriptions, the annual dinner was called off due to lack of interest, and the club appears to have fizzled out. Another Burns Club was formed in November 1899, and at their inaugural 'tattie and herring supper', a letter was read out by an 'Old Member' of the original club, castigating them as 'a plebeian sect', without the literary ideals of the original society. This club seems also to have fizzled out, as in November 1904 another Kirkintilloch Burns Club, with more literary pretentions, held its inaugural meeting.
