Archival historyThe Kirkintilloch Bowling Club was formed in September 1852 by a 'small group of gentlemen' who sought 'more exercise, especially outdoors'. A club member, Mr Furlong, offered to lease ground to the North of the Westermains House and the green was formally opened in July 1853. By 1888, however, the green was considered too short and a new ground was acquired at the head of Alexandra Street. The Kirkintilloch Bowling Green Co Ltd was established to build as well as maintain the new green which opened in June 1889. This green was the new home of the Kirkintilloch Bowling Club. Many of the original club members, nonetheless, remained at the Westermains green, becoming known as the Westermains Bowling Club.
The first reference to any game between Westermains and Kirkintilloch is in July 1897. Young players from both clubs met on Kirkintilloch's green and, although a close match, a victory for Westermains was reported. Relations between the Kirkintilloch and Westermains clubs were strained and, in a bid to resolve their differences, both clubs arranged a reconciliation match in July 1898. The Rechabite Band of Kirkintilloch, known today as the Kirkintilloch band, was invited along to play, encouraging a large turnout of the public. The return match in August, once again, proved a success and in subsequent years became 'something of a local "derby"'.
