Archival historyThis walkway follows the line of the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway which opened in 1826, linking the Monklands Coalfield with the Forth and Clyde Canal to enable coal to be taken by barge to Edinburgh. The last train left Kirkintilloch on 2nd April 1966 and although the level crossing at Lenzie Road was no longer required the vicinity is still known as 'Whitegates'.
