Archival historyWhen Kirkintilloch was created a police burgh in 1836, burgh administration was carried out by elected 'Police Commissioners'. From January 1901 the Police Commissioners were renamed Provost, Bailies and Councillors under the terms of the Town Councils (Scotland) Act 1900. Collectively they were known as the Town Council.
Until 1909, a separate volume of signed copies of minutes was kept for the Council and each committee. From 1901 onwards, in addition to the manuscript signed minutes the Town Council issued an annual volume which contained printed minutes of all council and committee meetings. From 1909 the single annual volume of printed minutes became the official signed copy, and separate volumes of committee minutes were generally abandoned.
