Admin history/BiographyAuchinairn School was founded c 1760, most of the children in the village previously attending school at Cadder. It was founded with the aid of a sum of money for provision of a school, mortified in the will of Reverend James Warden, a native of Auchinairn ordained at Cadder who had died in 1743. Although the sum allowed for a schoolmaster's salary, it was not sufficient to allow for the school building, house and garden required by law. The school at this time was considered a poor, inadequate place with a tenuous existence. It required the further legacy of Dr William Leechman to provide Auchinairn with a settled school. Dr Leechman bequeathed land for an extension of the school building, master's garden and yard and this was erected c 1830. Archibald Sommerville, the master entered duty on 4 Dec 1871 having been a pupil teacher at St James Parish School, Glasgow and having trained at the church training college in Glasgow. Previously he had taught at Fullerton School, Tollcross and Innerleithen Subscription School. A new Auchinairn School building was opened in 1968. In 2013 East Dunbartonshire Council decided to close Auchinairn Primary School and nursery class, Woodhill Primary School and Cleddens Learning and Childcare Centre, and establish a new school to be built on the Woodhill Primary site. The new school was named Thomas Muir Primary.
