Admin history/BiographyThe Kirkintilloch branch of the Young Men's Christian Association was founded in 1873. It was formed by four 'young men': John Robertson, John Young, Andrew Gray and James Downie, and it organised regular Sunday morning prayer meetings and a variety of other social functions. Initially based at the Temperance Hall, in 1896 the Association moved to purpose-built premises in Cowgate. Several missionaries, six Kirkintilloch Provosts and three MPs were included amongst its former members.
After the second world war its membership declined and in spite of efforts to rejuvenate the Association, notably in its centenary year, it fell into abeyance. Its halls in Cowgate were taken over by the Clydesdale Bank and demolished in 1976.
