Admin history/BiographyM & C Switchgear Limited was set up in 1931 by the firm Mavor & Coulson Limited. Mavor & Coulson started up in the 1870s as a general engineering business, and moved into electric lighting in 1881. By the 1920s they were a mining machine manufacturer with an electrical department which produced electric motors and controllers for their coal cutting machines.
M & C Switchgear was based in a former spinning mill at Kelvinside in Kirkintilloch. They produced power distribution equipment for general industrial use and flameproof equipment for coal mines. By the late 1950s the company reached its peak of success supplying many overseas markets and having about 600 employees. They began to move away from power distribution equipment to motor control gear and were one of the early developers of motor control centres, used by major oil and petrochemical companies. Mavor & Coulson Ltd merged with Anderson Boyes Ltd in 1966, and for a while M & C Switchgear was known as the Switchgear unit of Anderson Strathclyde. The Kirkintilloch factory closed in 1986 and M & C Switchgear moved to Bridgeton. They were sold to Beejay Rewinds in 1990 and the company now no longer trades in its own right, having been merged into Allenwest Wallacetown in 1996.
