Admin history/BiographyThe Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 (19 & 20 Geo. V, c.25) allowed county councils to draw up a scheme of district councils, to be composed partly of directly elected district councillors from electoral divisions within the district. District councils had various responsibilities delegated to them by the county council (principally relating to relief of the poor or able-bodied unemployed until 1948, burial grounds and the management of special water supply, lighting and scavenging districts). District councils were abolished in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 (c.65).
