Admin history/BiographyJames Mackintosh Slimmon was born at Haughhead, Campsie, in 1865, the eldest son of James Slimmon, Camphill, who owned a weaving factory at Kelvinside. He was educated at Kirkintilloch and Glasgow University and became manager of his father's factory. His love of writing led him to attempt to establish a career in journalism in Edinburgh, but this was unsuccessful, and he moved back to Kirkintilloch, resuming his work as factory manager. He married Helen, daughter of Mr Thomas Arnott of the Peel.
Throughout his life, Slimmon was subject to chronic ill health, and he died in 1898 at the age of 33, a few days after the publication of his volume of verse 'The Dead Planet and other Poems'.
