Archival historyDue to the increased popularity of golf in Scotland in 1895, it was proposed to found a club in Milngavie. A meeting was held on 6th May 1895 in Milngavie Burgh Hall and chaired by the Provost Major Walter Drew, JP. Andrew Stirling who later became club captain in 1906 had already entered discussions with William Graham, tenant of Laighpark Farm concerning the lease of 60 acres of rough pasturage owned by the Duke of Montrose. The ground was surveyed with the help of the Auchterlonie brothers from St Andrews and 9 holes were staked out. Permission was then sought from the Duke of Montrose for leasing the ground from the farmer and extending the course to 18 holes as far as Craigallion Road.
The formal beginning of the golf club was 16th May 1895 with the Duke of Montrose as patron. Membership was 97 gentlemen, 17 ladies and 2 boys. The course opened for play on 8th June 1895. The official opening took place on 9th April 1896 with the Auchterlonies playing an exhibition match. 1904 saw further improvements to the course and a new club house. The new course was opened by the Marquis of Graham on 26th May 1906. In 1927 the club acquired the land where the course was and part of Mugdock Moor which they subsequently sold to Milngavie Town Council in 1938, when the money went towards the cost of building the present clubhouse.
The two principal trophies are the Carrick Cross and the Milngavie Cup. The Carrick Cross was donated by John Carrick on his demission as captain in 1897. He recommended it be played for as a challenge medal. Baillie Bissland provided a cup in 1897 which came to be known as the Milngavie Cup. The present club championship trophy is a bronze statuette donated by W Scott Cochran in 1960 and replacing the Highland Light Infantry Cup which was presented by the officers at Maryhill Barracks who had the courtesy of the course while serving there.
The course itself lies on an old drove road.
