Archival historyOn 16th May 1975 Scottish local government was reorganised and the local authority for the area of Bearsden, Milngavie, High Craigton and Windyhill became Bearsden and Milngavie District Council. Strathclyde Region had responsibility for major services but the new district council's responsibilities were as follows:-
local planning and industrial development
building control
housing
environmental health
refuse collection and disposal, street cleaning
food hygiene
clean air
cemeteries
shops acts
parks and recreation
libraries and art gallery
licensing functions (liquor, betting and gaming etc)
Further reorganisation in 1996 saw the abolition of regional councils and the creation of new single tier authorities. Bearsden and Milngavie became part of East Dunbartonshire Council.
