Admin history/BiographyMilngavie was created a police burgh on 10th May 1875 under the General Police and Improvement (Scotland) Act 1862 (25 & 26 Vict., c.101). Burgh administration was carried out by police commissioners who were responsible for the cleansing, lighting, policing and public health of the burgh. Under the Town Councils
(Scotland) Act 1900 (63 & 64 Vict. C.49) the police commissioners were abolished in favour of the older term of 'provost, bailies and councillors'. The burgh boundaries were extended in 1901 and 1921, 1934 and again in 1945 with the last extension taking place in 1963. The first provost was Robert Crawford and the last in 1975 was Mary L H Blacklock. Milngavie Burgh was abolished in 1975 under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 (c.65), and its powers were assumed by Strathclyde Regional Council and Strathkelvin District Council. These in turn were replaced by East Dunbartonshire Council in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 (c.39).
