Admin history/BiographyAlexander Thorburn was born in 1881 in Dumbarton but moved to Kirkintilloch with his parents as a child. He attended Lairdsland School and Lenzie Academy before studying law at Glasgow University. In 1895 he joined the Kirkintilloch firm of Messrs Patrick and Paterson, Solicitors, eventually becoming Depute Town Clerk and then Joint Town Clerk with David Patrick, and taking on the role of Town Clerk after David Patrick's death. On 30 April 1952 he was created a Freeman of the Burgh of Kirkintilloch. He retired in 1952 and set up the solicitor's practice of Messrs Thorburn and Paterson in offices in the Barony Chambers. He retired from law in 1964 and died in 1965 at the age of 83.
As well as his law practice, Mr Thorburn had many other interests, being secretary and director of the Forth and Clyde Steel Foundry Co, Clerk to the Kirkintilloch Education Sub-Committee, director and honorary president of the Kirkintilloch and District Agricultural Association and depute chairman of the Savings Bank of Kirkintilloch.
