Admin history/BiographyThe Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir was founded in 1921 by John Knox and a group of singers from church choirs and other local singing groups.
In 1946, at the age of 85, John Knox handed the baton to his son, and then in 1978, to his grandson, Ian Knox, who became the choir’s musical director. Following Ian’s retirement in 1999, Sally McLellan was appointed as the first female conductor of the choir. Sally had been the choir’s accompianist since 1992.
The choir is a charitable organisation which performs in many concerts and festivals around Kirkintilloch, Glasgow and further afield. It raises thousands of pounds for organisations and charities both locally and nationally.
The choir hold an annual concert every Spring and a bi-annual charity concert incorporating the primary schools choral festival. The choir also awards music prizes to three local secondary schools in order to encourage music in schools.
In September 2005 the choir sang with the Cardiff Male Choir in Llandaff Cathedral as part of Cardiff’s centenary as a city and fifty years as the capital of Wales.
The choir’s motto ‘Blessed is the world that sings - gentle are its songs’ is a reminder of its church choir background.
