Admin history/BiographyThere were earlier schools in Milngavie including the 'Old School' from 1790 beside 'Rockbank' on Mugdock Road. The Bridge School (Milngavie Infants School) was established by Rev McNaughton of Cairns Church, and later transferred to a hall at Cheapside and became known as the 'Hall School'. Another school was the Hillhead Infant School on the ground floor of a two storey building run by Isabella Hosie. The Education (Scotland) Act 1872 created school boards in Scotland with a statutory duty to provide education for all children between the ages of 5 and 13. This resulted in the building of a new Milngavie school at Hillhead on land owned by Mr Ker of Dougalston. The school was opened in 1875 with accommodation for 400 pupils. Later separate Primary and Junior Secondary departments were created. The school is still on the original site in Hillhead St, Milngavie.
