Admin history/BiographyThe Lenzie Tennis Club was established in 1888 by members of the Lenzie Cricket Club, with Mr Robert Dempster being the first President of the Club. The first annual general meeting was held by the members on the 12th of February 1889, and was attended by 30 lady members and 40 gentlemen members. The club committee was strictly only for men but it was decided that a ladies’ committee be formed to serve teas.
In September of 1888 the club and its members promoted their tennis tournament in order to try and popularise the game. This proved successful as by April in 1889 the Glasgow Evening Post reported that the clubs’ courts were popular despite the windy and rainy weather. Juniors membership was also established in 1889 though this came with strict rules: junior members were only allowed to play on weekdays and never after 5pm. Throughout the early 1890s, the clubs membership attendance fluctuated as members were enticed to join Lenzie Golf Club instead. This was reported by Dumbarton Herald and County Advertiser in 1892 and confirmed by minute book one (1889 – 1901) as membership fell by 12 members from the 1891 season to the 1892 season.
In 1894 a fourth court was built as the club had a rising number of members. In 1911 the first ladies team played at the club as previously, the club had only male teams or mixed-doubles that were allowed to play on the courts and in competitions. During World War One the club still held monthly committee meetings along with tournaments.
In the 1921 season, the club entered two gents, two ladies and one mixed double team into the West of Scotland Tennis Leagues. The club is still operational to this day although the original courts were replaced in 1989 and then again in 1998. The club were awarded charitable status in 2019 and are officially recognised as Lenzie Tennis Club (SCIO), charity number SCO49633.
